What are these Bugs in My Planter Pots?
I plant in planter pots every year. I typically change the soil every 2 years, I changed the soil last year so I am fertilizing the soil and turning it. These are 5 gallon pots, not cheap to fill with top soil every year, but anyway, I'm turning the soil, and when I was resting, I noticed these 1/4in bugs crawling over the surface and throughout the top of the soil. These bugs are small heads, no antenna that I can see, A beetle type body at least 2-3 time the size of the head, the Head is more brown and the body is more orange, the bug in general is shiny...probably the only reason I noticed it, they are about 1/4 in (2cm) long....I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what these bugs are, I do not know if they are a pest I need to rid the Planter of before I plant my seedlings. Any Suggestions Welcome! I have been scouring the internet and they are not Springtails, they are not symphylans, they are not gnat larva...Hmmm....
They could be lady bugs, if this the case be happy you have them they will keep plants free of white flies, aphids and other insects. Look up Lady Bugs and compare the ones you have to the pictures and see if that is what you have.
If not, then you should leach the soil in the pots, apply some type of pesticide soap spray and that will eliminate most unwanted bugs.
